From the outside a consumer Surface device and a commercial Surface device looks the identical. However, there are key differences between the two when it comes to internal device hardware, software and the support experience. Let's do a deep dive.
Retail device can be distinguished with the default Operating System (Windows Home) and commercial devices use Windows Pro or Enterprise as default.
The AI PC range of Surface Pro 10 and Laptop 6 using Intel chipset only exist in the commercial space. There is no consumer version of this device. The Copilot + PC range have retail and commercial options.
Although you could upgrade a Windows Home device to a Windows Pro/Enterprise by using OEM licensing, Microsoft do not recommend this pathway and it is unsupported.
