Microsoft 365’s Copilot has been revolutionising how we interact with our universe of data, including emails, meetings, chats, documents, and more. However, effective content management and data governance are crucial for maximising its effectiveness. That’s where Restricted SharePoint Search comes in, offering organisations the flexibility to maintain momentum with Copilot deployment while ensuring robust data security.

What is Restricted SharePoint Search?

Restricted SharePoint Search is a feature that allows organisations to disable organisation-wide search, limiting Copilot and Enterprise Search to a select set of SharePoint sites. This ensures that sensitive content is not overexposed, aligning with Microsoft Purview’s data security solutions and SharePoint Advanced Management’s content lifecycle management.

How Does It Impact Users?

When enabled, Restricted SharePoint Search will restrict users to interacting with files and content they own or have previously accessed. It’s important to note that this feature doesn’t change user permissions but rather controls content discoverability.

Availability & Licensing

Starting in April, Restricted SharePoint Search will be available to all tenants with Copilot for Microsoft 365 subscriptions. No additional license is required, and it can be enabled using PowerShell scripts with the necessary permissions.
