With the announcement of Copilot for M365 availability for CSP customers on Jan 16th, we have seen lots of interest from our partners looking to purchase it for themselves and their customers, so for this month I’ve done an FAQ style blog covering the most common questions we are getting around the Copilot’s.
Copilot for Microsoft 365
What is Copilot for M365?
Copilot for M365 is the AI-powered tool that’s integrated into the Microsoft 365 apps – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Loop, Whiteboard, and OneNote. It leverages Large Language Models (LMMs) along with your data in Microsoft Graph to generate content and find information.
Are demo tenants available for partners?
Currently only internal Microsoft employees have access to Copilot for M365 demo tenants. Microsoft may be making demo tenants available through CDX in future, but we do not have confirmation on if/when this will be available.
Are Copilot trial licenses available?
Currently there are no trial licenses available for Copilot for M365. At this stage if you want to test it, you must purchase a paid license.
Is there charity and education licenses for Copilot?
There are no charity Copilot for M365 licenses. Microsoft have not confirmed if or when charity licenses will become available. If charity customers want to access Copilot for M365 now they will need to purchase the commercial license.
There are now Copilot for M365 Faculty and Staff Education SKUs, but they are not yet available through CSP.
What subscription terms are available for Copilot for M365?
Copilot for M365 can only be purchased on annual commit, annual billing. Currently, you cannot purchase a monthly commit subscription or annual commitment subscription with monthly billing.
What is the difference between Copilot for M365 and Copilot Pro?
Copilot for M365 is a commercial is for commercial, academic, and non-profit customers with Microsoft 365 work or school accounts. Copilot Pro is the Copilot experience for people with Microsoft 365 personal or family accounts.
How much does Copilot for M365 cost?
The RRP for Copilot for M365 is $582.00NZD per user, per year.
Is Copilot for M365 included in our Solutions Partner Benefits?
Copilot for M365 is not currently included in the benefits for any of the Solution Partner Designations.
What are the prerequisite licenses for Copilot for M365?
The Copilot for M365 is an add-on license that can be added to any of the following subscriptions:
- Microsoft 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 E3
- Office 365 E3
- Office 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 A5 for faculty
- Microsoft 365 A3 for faculty
- Office 365 A5 for faculty
- Office 365 A3 for faculty
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard
- Microsoft 365 Business Premium
Since Copilot for M365 add-on can only be purchased on annual commit, make sure to avoid scenarios where the base license expires before the add-on license, leaving the tenant with no eligible base licenses.
For each Copilot for M365 add-on license you purchase, you must have a valid base license, so you cannot end up with more Copilot for M365 add-on licenses than base licenses.
Are there any purchase minimums for Copilot for M365?
When Copilot for M365 first became generally available, there was a purchase minimum of 300 seats. As of January 16th 2024 this requirement now been removed, so customers of any size can now purchase Copilot for M365.
Can Copilot for M365 subscriptions be co-termed?
You can co-term Copilot for M365 subscriptions with the base license if it’s also an annual commitment subscription. You cannot co-term the subscription with a monthly commit subscription. As normal, if the original subscription term is reduce by you co-terming the subscription, charges will be prorated.
Is Copilot for M365 included in any licenses?
Copilot for M365 is not included in any of the Microsoft 365 or Office 365 licenses (like M365 E5). It is however included as part of the Copilot for Sales and Copilot for Service licenses.
Does Copilot for M365 count towards Solutions Partner Designations?
Not at this stage, but Microsoft are working on adding Copilot for M365 as an eligible workload so this is expected to come in future.
Are they any partner incentives for Copilot for M365?
Copilot for M365 is included in the Global Strategic Product Accelerator – Tier 2 incentive meaning that partners with the one or more of the following Solutions Partner Designations receive an additional 7% rebate on the subscription: Digital & App Innovation (Azure), Infrastructure (Azure), Modern Work, Data & AI (Azure)

What is Copilot?
Copilot is the AI-powered chat that is integrated into Bing. There are two Copilot experiences, Copilot (previously called Bing Chat) and Copilot with Commercial Data Protection (previously called Bing Chat Enterprise.
What are the license requirements for Copilot with Commercial data protection?
The consumer version of Copilot that’s available to all Bing users is free. Copilot with Commercial Data Protection is included in the following licenses:
- Microsoft 365 E3
- Microsoft 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 F3
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard
- Microsoft 365 Business Premium
- Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 for faculty
Previously you could purchase a standalone license, however the standalone license is no longer available now that Microsoft have increased the number of licenses it is included in.
In early February 2024, Microsoft will be including Copilot with Commercial Data Protection in more education licenses for faculty and students. The following subscriptions will become eligible for Commercial Data Protection (including student use benefit licenses):
- Office 365 A1/A3/A5 for Faculty
- Microsoft 365 A1 for Faculty
- Microsoft 365 A1/A3/A5 for Students (higher education students aged 18+)
- Office 365 A1/A3/A5 for Students (higher education students aged 18+)
What is the difference between Copilot and Copilot with Commercial Data Protection?
Copilot with Commercial Data Protection requires you to sign in with your M365 work account and adds Commercial Data protection to the Copilot experience meaning:
- Your Copilot prompts only leaves your Microsoft tenant temporarily to reach the Copilot service and is only retained for a short caching period while the chat is active. After the user closes the browser, the chat topic is reset, or the chat expires, Microsoft discards all the prompts and responses. and Microsoft Your data does not leave your Microsoft tenant.
- Chat history is not retained. There is not any features available for organisations to report or audit on Copilot chat history.
- Advertising is not targeted
- Chat’s are not used to train the underlying AI models
What is the difference between Copilot for M365 and Copilot?
The difference between Copilot and Copilot for M365 is that Copilot only has access to publicly available web data from the Bing search index, it does not have access to any of your Microsoft 365 data (emails, documents etc), even when signed in with your work M365 account for Copilot with Commercial Data Protection. Copilot for M365 has access to the data in the Microsoft Graph meaning that it can use your data and content in the responses it generates. It’s also integrated in the M365 apps so you can access Copilot for M365 directly from the applications like Word, Outlook etc.
How do you set up Copilot with Commercial Data Protection?
Copilot with Commercial Data Protection is automatically enabled for users that are assigned a license that includes it.
How do users access Copilot with Commercial Data Protection?
It can be accessed by going to the either of the following URLs in Edge:
You need to sign in with your work M365 account in Bing to use the Copilot experience with Commercial Data Protection. Once signed in, you should see a ‘Protected’ symbol in the top right corner of the window – this is how you know you are using the version of Copilot that has Commercial Data Protection.
Copilot for Sales
What is Copilot for Sales?
Copilot for Sales is designed to help sellers save time on manual and timing consuming tasks, like data entry in CRM and writing meeting notes, so they can focus more on selling and engaging with customers and prospects. It integrates in Dynamics 365 Sales and Salesforce, and it includes Copilot for M365 meaning you get all the benefits across the M365 suite and your CRM system.
How much does Copilot for Sales cost and when is it available to purchase?
Copilot for Sales is available to purchase from 1st Feb 2024, and costs $50USD/user/month.
If the customer already has Copilot for Microsoft 365, they can pay for a $20USD/user/month add-on license, and customers with a Dynamics 365 Sales Premium customers can pay for a $30USD/user/month add-on license to get the full features included in Copilot for Sales.
What is the difference between Sales Copilot and Copilot for Sales?
Copilot for Sales is an evolution of Sales Copilot. It combines the power of Copilot for M365 and Sales Copilot, using your customer data in CRM and data in Microsoft Graph ( in docs, emails, chats from the M365 apps).
