This month’s Meet the Expert features Paul Wright , Microsoft Partner Development Manager based in Christchurch. Paul works closely with partners across the region to help them navigate Microsoft’s fast-moving ecosystem and turn constant change into real commercial opportunities. In this edition, Paul shares how successful partners stay on top of Microsoft by focusing on what’s relevant to their managed service models, thinking in solutions rather than products, leaning on Dicker Data for insight, and turning Microsoft change into meaningful, outcome driven customer conversations.
“Microsoft is a big part of my managed services offering. With things changing so often, how do I keep up without it becoming a full‑time job?”
I hear this a lot. And the honest answer is - you’re not supposed to keep up with everything.
Microsoft moves quickly. If you try to follow every announcement, SKU change, promotion, and roadmap update, it becomes distracting fast. The real goal isn’t knowing it all. It’s knowing what matters to your customers and your managed services model and letting Dicker Data do the filtering.
From my perspective, the partners who do this well focus on three things.
First, they use Dicker Data as part of their team. Our job is to absorb Microsoft changes and translate them into what it means commercially for partners. A common focus being licensing changes, CoPilot readiness and security positioning. We take what Microsoft is doing and make it practical and relevant in a New Zealand context. Partners who engage with us regularly don’t have to decode Microsoft updates themselves.
Second, they think in solutions, not products. You don’t need deep knowledge across every Microsoft workload. What you need is confidence in the platforms your customers actually use, and a clear view of where Microsoft is investing over the long term.
Third, they turn change into customer conversations. Most Microsoft updates create legitimate reasons to speak with customers. For example, security improvements, licence optimisation, or productivity gains. When the conversation is outcome‑focused, change becomes an opportunity rather than extra admin.
At the end of the day, staying on top of Microsoft isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about knowing where to focus and who to lean on. With the support of Dicker Data, Microsoft stops feeling complex and starts driving growth.
