The New Copilot Is Here

Microsoft has just announced one of the most significant evolutions of Copilot since its launch, introducing a new Copilot experience built around three capabilities: Home, Code and Autopilot. Together, these capabilities signal Microsoft's vision for the next phase of AI at work, moving beyond productivity assistance and towards AI-powered execution.

For partners, this is far more than a product update.

It represents a shift from AI helping people complete tasks to AI helping organisations deliver outcomes. The opportunity is no longer centred on deploying Copilot licences. It's about helping customers redesign processes, build AI-powered solutions, govern autonomous agents and operationalise AI at scale.

The Next Phase of AI Adoption

Over the past two years, customer conversations have largely focused on productivity.

  • How can AI help employees work faster?
  • How can Copilot improve efficiency?
  • How can organisations realise value from Microsoft 365?

While those questions remain important, they're rapidly being replaced by a new set of conversations:

  • How do we automate end-to-end business processes?
  • How do we deploy and govern AI agents?
  • How do we build solutions faster?
  • How do we manage AI consumption and cost?
  • How do we redesign work for an AI-enabled workforce?

These are strategic transformation conversations, and they represent a significant growth opportunity for partners.

Why Home, Code and Autopilot Matter

While Microsoft has introduced three distinct capabilities, the broader story is convergence.

Home becomes the central experience where users access work, conversations, documents, applications and delegated tasks. Code extends solution development beyond traditional developers, enabling more people to build applications and automations using natural language. Autopilot introduces persistent AI agents that can continue executing work independently over time.

Individually, each capability is important.

Collectively, they represent Microsoft's vision of an AI-powered operating model where users, agents, applications and business processes work together through a single Copilot experience.

The Real Opportunity for Partners

The greatest opportunity isn't in the technology itself.

It's in the services that customers will need to deploy it successfully.

As organisations move towards autonomous agents and AI-powered workflows, demand will continue to grow across:

  • AI governance and risk management
  • Agent strategy and implementation
  • Business process transformation
  • Security and compliance services
  • Adoption and change management
  • Managed AI services
  • FinOps for AI and consumption optimisation

This is particularly important as Microsoft introduces new FinOps for AI capabilities, recognising that governance, visibility and cost management will become critical components of successful AI adoption.

The partners that build capability in these areas today will be best positioned to capture long-term value as customer AI maturity increases.

The Commercial Shift Matters Just as Much

While Home, Code and Autopilot are the headline announcements, one of the most significant long-term changes may be Microsoft's evolving commercial model.

For everyday productivity scenarios, Microsoft continues to provide a fixed-cost User Subscription Licence (USL) model. However, Microsoft has also introduced Usage-Based Billing (UBB) for agentic workloads, including Cowork, Code, Autopilot and long-running AI-powered processes.

This signals a shift from simply licensing users to managing AI consumption.

Just as significant as the product innovation is Microsoft's move towards a hybrid AI economy, where traditional user licensing coexists with consumption-based services. As customers deploy more agents, autonomous workflows and AI-powered business processes, understanding where fixed licensing ends and consumption-based services begin will become increasingly important.

Coming next: For partners, this creates new opportunities across governance, optimisation, managed services and FinOps for AI. We will explore these changes in more detail, including what remains covered under User Subscription Licensing, where Usage-Based Billing applies and what this means for customer conversations, in a dedicated follow-up blog: M365 Copilot Business Billing is changing: What partners need to know before 2 November

Availability

Partners should note that these capabilities are being released through a phased rollout.

Microsoft has announced that Home and Code will begin rolling out through the Microsoft Frontier program in the coming weeks, while Autopilot expands into private preview at the end of September 2026. Broader availability timelines have not yet been announced.

While customers may not immediately have access to all capabilities, the direction of travel is clear.

Now is the time to build capability, develop service offerings and prepare customer conversations.

What Partners Should Do Now

My recommendation is simple.

Become Customer Zero.

  • The partners that lead the next wave of AI transformation will be those using it themselves.
  • Invest in Copilot.
  • Build agents.
  • Establish governance frameworks.
  • Understand emerging AI consumption models.
  • Develop repeatable customer outcomes.
  • Most importantly, move beyond talking about AI productivity and start helping customers think about AI-enabled business transformation.

How Dicker Data Can Help

Over the coming weeks, Dicker Data will incorporate these announcements into our Copilot, Agent 365 and AI transformation programs, helping partners develop the skills, methodologies and service offerings required for the next phase of AI adoption.

The market is moving from AI assistance to AI execution.

Microsoft has made its direction clear.

The opportunity now is for partners to lead customers on that journey.
