Licensing Prerequisites for Copilot for M365
Microsoft 365 E5 or A5: Recommended for best-in-class security. It includes Office 365, Windows, and Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS), which is a Microsoft security suite that includes a range of security technologies important to the data/AI conversations needed with Copilot.
Microsoft 365 Business Premium: Recommended for organisations with 300 users or less. It includes core security controls that are important for data/AI conversations needed with Copilot for M365 .
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard: Available for organisations with 300 users or less. It provides baseline security, but we strongly recommend reviewing your data estate & security technology before moving forward with a Copilot purchase, and alternative information governance controls in place.
- Microsoft 365 E3 or A3: Includes core security controls. It bundles Office 365 and EMS but does not include Microsoft Defender. We advise you review your data estate & security technology before moving forward with a Copilot purchase, and alternative information governance controls in place.
- Office 365 E5: Provides baseline security. It includes a license for the Office 365 suite, without EMS, but with Defender and other security features like identity access and management, information protection, and insider risk management.
- Office 365 E3: Offers minimal security. We strongly recommend reviewing the licensing and upgrading to one with more security controls in place.
Please note that the above licensing recommendations are based on the security features of each license and are not exhaustive. We recommend that you review your organisation’s security needs and consult with a security expert before making a decision.

Readiness Steps
- Make sure sensitive data is protected and secure, in particular any sensitive data such as HR documentation.
- To ensure that Copilot provides accurate insights and recommendations, it is essential to invest time in cleaning and structuring your data. Ensure that your data adheres to data governance policies and complies with relevant regulations. A well-prepared data environment allows Copilot to function effectively, enabling more informed decision-making across your organisation.
- To fully leverage Copilot’s capabilities, provide comprehensive training to your workforce. Equip employees with the knowledge and skills required to navigate and utilize this AI-powered assistant effectively. Training should encompass not only the technical aspects of Copilot but also its practical applications within your organisation’s workflows. By fostering a knowledgeable and proficient team, you can ensure that Copilot becomes an integral part of your daily operations, enhancing productivity and efficiency.
- Since Copilot interacts with sensitive data, it is crucial to review your organisation’s cybersecurity measures. Prioritise data security by evaluating and strengthening your existing protocols. Consider encryption, access controls, and authentication mechanisms to safeguard critical information. Additionally, establish clear policies and procedures for data handling within the Copilot environment. By proactively addressing security concerns, you can confidently integrate Copilot while maintaining the integrity of your data.
- Buying a couple of Co-Pilot licences and testing what it can access could be one way of checking and securing sensitive data before offering out to a wider user base.

Copilot for Microsoft 365 is live on the Dicker Data Portal & is available for purchase.
Microsoft have advised that Copilot for Microsoft 365 will initially be available as an annual commitment, paid upfront only. (No monthly commits, no monthly pricing)
Copilot for Microsoft 365 will require one of the following underlying licenses:
- Microsoft 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 E3
- Office 365 E3
- Office 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 A5 for faculty
- Microsoft 365 A3 for faculty
- Office 365 A5 for faculty
- Office 365 A3 for faculty
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard
- Microsoft 365 Business Premium
Currently there is no Internal Use Rights allocation for Copilot for Microsoft 365 for partners, and no trials for Copilot for Microsoft 365 available.
Co-terming with existing subscriptions is also available.
The Recommended Retail Price for Copilot for Microsoft 365 is $582.00 for the annual commitment.
